Townsend, Ionia township farmer, following prayer services at his home. Rev. William B. Hunting officiated in the services. Townsend died Sunday as the result of a heart attack. He was 84 years of age. Honorary pall bearers for the services were M. Clyde Stout and George H. Rudd. Active bearers were Thomas I. Martin, Albert Hinds, Steven Kimball, Lewis Janes, John Detmers and Ora Weed. Flower bearers were Mrs. William Weisgerber, Mrs. Arthur Rumbaugh, Mrs. John Detmers, Mrs. Ora Weed and Mrs. Harold Harwood. Interment was in the family lot in Tuttle Cemetery. Funeral arrangements were handled by Boynton’s Funeral Home, of Ionia, and it was estimated that over 300 relatives and friends were present for the services. Mr. Townsend, because of his interest in township politics, was a candidate for county office in the early 1930’s, and later sought nomination as Ionia County Representative and Probate Judge. He attracted statewide attention about 1930 when he contested in court the then new state law controlling Bang’s disease among cattle. He protested an order which condemned a cow in one of his herds and its subsequent slaughter. Townsend has lived on the E. P. Kelsey farm south of the Ionia Country Club, since he purchased it in 1916. He is survived by his wife, Sara Ida; one son, Ray Townsend, of Ionia township one daughter, Mrs. Charles Lange; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
