Wave, Wed. Jan. 26, 1983 LAKE ODESSA- The Rev. Harley V. Townsend, 96, formerly of Woodland, who had made his home at Provincial House, Hastings, died there Jan. 21. Born in Woodland, Dec. 25, 1896, he was the son of John and Mary Leedy Townsend. He attended Eckhardt rural school, Woodland High School and graduated from Barry County Normal and Bethany Bible Seminary in Chicago. He was married to Nellie N. Teeter on May 28, 1913, in Scottville. She preceded him in death Oct. 22, 1965. Rev. Townsend associated with the United Brethren from 1925 to 1941; the Loon Creek, Inc., Church from 1941 to 1943; the Sunfield Church from 1943 to 1946; the Battle Creek Church from 1945 to 1957, the New Haven Church from 1957 to 1964, and served the ministry part-time from 1963 to 1969. While at Provincial House he conducted weekly services and ministered to other residents. He observed the 60th anniversary of his ordination March 11, 1976, and was named by his denomination Pastor Emeritus of Michigan. Surviving are three sons, Charles of Middleville, Buryl of Nashville and John of Bellevue; one daughter, Mrs. Mary Pennock of Battle Creek; 14 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild. One son, Dale, a grandson and three brothers and two sisters preceded him in death. Funeral services will be Today at 1:30 p.m. from the Pickens-Koops Funeral chapel, Lake Odessa, the Rev. John Tomlinson officiating. Burial will be in Woodland Memorial Park. A memorial has been established for Church of Brethren Student Aid Fund, in care of the funeral home.
