Principal Dies After Long Illness

Ernest J. Townsend, 37, of Clarksville passed away at Pennock hospital, 
Hastings, Thursday afternoon after an extended illness. He was born at 
Clarksville, March 1, 1935 the son of George and Ada (Ernest) Townsend, and 
moved with his parents to Orleans in 1936.

Mr. Townsend attended Belding public schools and Ionia County Normal at Stanton 
and Western Michigan College at Kalamazoo where he received his Masters Degree 
in School Administration in 1968.

He taught two years at the Hubble school in Ionia county and had been affiliated 
with the Clarksville school system for 16 1/2 years and had taught fourth and 
fifth grades before becoming Superintendent of the school in 1956. Following the 
merger with the Lakewood School District in 1963, he was named principal of the 
Clarksville school and also taught the fifth grade, until recently when leaving 
because of his health.

Mrs. Townsend was a member of the Clarksville Bible church, the Lions club and 
F&A.M. lodge at Clarksville, the Michigan Education Association, director of the 
summer recreation programs and the Clarksville Pony league coach.

Surviving are his wife, the former Jeannine Karrow of Midland, whom he married 
in 1966; two sons, Michael and Steven at home; his mother, Mrs. Ada Townsend of 
Orleans; a sister, Mrs. Florence Collom of Pontiac; and a half brother, Norman 
Wright of Coldwater.

Funeral services were held on Sunday afternoon at 2:30 at the Clarksville Bible 
Church. Rev. Elwood Norton and Rev. Arthur Ruder officiated with burial in the 
Clarksville cemetery.

Memorial contributions for the Clarksville Baseball Improvement program may be 
left at the Pickens Funeral Chapel, Clarksville. Mr. Townsend reposed at the 
Chapel at Clarksville until Sunday noon.
