Townsend, 76, of 431 Morse street, died Tuesday at 2:15 p.m. at the Ionia County Memorial hospital where he had been a patient since January 31. He had been an invalid since September 1948. Born August 4, 1879, near Pewamo, he was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Alonzo Townsend. He was a resident of Ionia county most of his life. Townsend was married to Bessie M. Helms of Pewamo May 28, 1905. He was an employee of the Consumers Power Company for more than 20 years. Survivors include his wife, Bessie; eight children, Maxwell of Drayton Plains, Dale of Lyons, Leon Glen (L.G.) of Keego Harbor, Mrs. Elsie Fletcher of Drayton Plains, Mrs. Beth Roberts of Ionia, Mrs. Marie Stackman of Portland, Mrs. Sunshine Erridge of Lyons, and Mrs. Ruth Clerk of Lyons; one sister, Mrs. Ora Gee, of Lansing; 26 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. Services will be Saturday March 31 at the Lyons Methodist church with the Rev. Robert Watt officiating. Burial will be in the Muir cemetery. The body will be at the Shaw-Rivett funeral home in Muir until the time of the service. Subsequent Publication: Monday, April 2, 1956: Funeral services for Fred W. Townsend of Ionia, who died Tuesday at Ionia County Memorial hospital, were held Saturday afternoon at 2 o’clock form the Lyons Methodist church, with the Rev. Robert Watt officiating. Burial was in Muir cemetery with arrangements by the Shaw-Rivett funeral home. Bearers were Frank Townsend, Claude Townsend, Albert Townsend, Weston Townsend, Hector Gee and Everett Schlienz. Judith Benedict was organist and Plyn Woodworth and Mrs. Vera Steadman were vocalists. Attending from out of town were Mr. and Mrs. Maxwell Townsend, Delores Townsend, Linda Townsend of Drayton Plains, Mr. and Mrs. Leon Glen Townsend, Leon Townsend, Jr. of Keego Harbor; Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Hawes, Mrs. Jack Ewers, Robert Shilling, Mr. and Mrs. Howard Fletcher, Ray Fletcher, Karen Fletcher of Pontiac. Mr. and Mrs. Tony Fundero, Mrs. Gladys Pew, Fay Carrick of East Dearborn; Mr. and Mrs. Lee Schlienz, Mr. and Mrs. Everett Schlienz, Mr. and Mrs. Donald Schlienz, Mr. and Mrs. Gaylord Rolf, Mr. and Mrs. E. L. Mann, Donald Mann, Mrs. Max Bader, Elizabeth Bader, D. D. Holland, Bud Bissonette, Carl Gillespie, Mrs. Clare Sharp of Lansing.
