Louise A. Townsend, 88, of Ionia died January 18 at Ionia Manor.  She was born 
July 1, 1900 in Newaygo, the daughter of Nels and Anna Nelson Christenson.  
She graduated from Newaygo High School in 1918 and attended Davenport College 
in Grand Rapids.  She worked for her father in Newaygo at the A & G Grocery 
Store.  She moved to Ionia in 1935 and was a member of the First United 
Methodist Church in Ionia, and a member of the Mother’s Study Club.  She was a 
lifetime member of the Order of the Eastern Star.  She was one of the first 
residents of Pine Vista, moving there in 1973.  She worked at Ionia State 
Hospital for 13 years.

She is survived by one son, James of Ionia; one daughter, Marcia Brown of 
Lorenburg, N.C.; four grandchildren; one brother, Walter Christenson, of 
Fremont; two sisters, Olive Robey of Newaygo and Garnet Cole of Sun City 
Center, Fla.; several nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her 
brother, Clifford Christenson in 1987.

Funeral services will be January 22, 1 p.m. at Cook Funeral Home, with the 
Rev. Keith Bovee and the Rev. Chester Tanase officiating.  Burial will be in 
Sunset Memorial Gardens in Ionia.   Visiting hours at 7-8:30 p.m. Friday and 2-
4 and 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday at the Rich Street Chapel.  Memorial contributions 
may be made to the First United Methodist Church of Ionia or the First Baptist 
Church of Ionia.
