Townsend, 79, retired farmer of route two, Woodland, died at 6;25 a.m. Thursday at Pennock hospital, Hastings, where he was hospitalized Saturday night. He was born in Darke county, Ohio, September, 20, 1882, the son of John H. and Mary Leedy Townsend. He was married September 20, 1909 at Woodland to Kathryn Oakes and spent his entire married life in the Woodland area. Mr. Townsend was a rural Woodland mail carrier 14 years, retiring as carrier in 1920. He served as Woodland township treasurer two years and retired from farming in 1948. He had been a member of South Woodland Church of the Brethren since 1909. Surviving besides his wife, Kathryn, are three sons, Garnet C. Townsend of Kalamazoo, Ralph H. of Woodland, and Franklin O. of Alto; 11 grandchildren; one great grandchild; and one brother, Rev. Harley V. Townsend of Middleton. The body will repose at Pickens funeral chapel until Saturday forenoon when it will be taken to South Woodland Church of the Brethren for service at 2 p.m. The Rev. Harold Wenger will officiate and burial will be at Woodland cemetery.
