The Carson City Gazette, January 21, 1898
Mrs. Abbie E. Townsend, wife of O. C. Townsend and mother of W. W. Townsend, 
died suddenly of apoplexy at her home in Hubbardston on Thursday evening, 
January 13th, 1898.  The news on Friday morning of her sudden death during the 
preceding night cast a gloom over the entire community.  

The funeral was held at the family residence on Monday afternoon.  The 
services were conducted by Rev. W. H. Skentlebury of Lake Odessa, formerly 
pastor of the Congregational Church in Hubbardston, assisted by Rev. N. M. 
Barnes of the M. E. Church and Rev. J. E. Landers of St. John’s Catholic 
Church.  A very large concourse of friends and neighbors, including the orders 
of Knights and Ladies of the Maccabees and Tuscan Lodge F&AM assembled to show 
their affection and sympathy.

The services at the house and grave were simple and impressive, while the 
exquisite floral offerings brought by societies and individuals lent their 
tender beauty and fragrance to soften the sadness of the parting hour.
