B. Townsend Today. Mrs. Gertrude Townsend, aged 84 years, died this morning at 8:30 o’clock, at her home, 322 Lafayette street. The funeral will be attended from the residence Wednesday afternoon at 2 o’clock, Rev. Cyrus Mendenhall officiating. Burial in Highland park cemetery. Friends are kindly requested to not send flowers. While old age was the direct cause of Mrs. Townsend’s death, the end came unexpectedly. The family were not looking for it at all at this time. The last years of her life had been broken by the fact that twice she sustained a broken hip, the first time when she fell in the hotel in Grand Rapids. But these injuries did not reduce her health. She was born in Yates county, New York, April 26..[unreadable line on the copy] She was the widow of the late Larman B. Townsend who died in March 1898, and is survived by four children, Miss Sue R. Townsend and Mrs. Clarence B. Wardle of Ionia, L. G. Townsend of Montana, Mrs. Louisa Edsall wife of Percy Edsall of Greenville, and a grandson, Louis Stanton of Los Angeles, son of their eldest daughter, Mrs. Edward Stanton who died there. Mrs. Townsend was esteemed by Ionians generally by her long and valued residence here. She was long a member of St. Johns Episcopal church, a regular attendant until her last injury.
