The Portland Advertiser, Tuesday, March 30, 1869

Sudden Death.—Yesterday, while Mr. Notley (Motley) Trail of this village was 
standing near the abutment of the dam on Grand River, looking at the ice 
floating down the river, he suddenly fell forward on his face to the ground.  
Medical aid was speedily procured, and restoratives applied, but without 
success.  His pulse did not immediately cease, but consciousness did not 
return, and the vital spark soon forsook its tenement of earth, for the 
untried spirit land.—The case was pronounced by the physicians to be heart 
disease.
