L. Trask, 88, at one time engaged in the banking and grain business in Pewamo, passed away Tuesday evening at the home of his daughter Mrs. Hattie White, at Niles. Mr. Trask had been making his home at St. Johns for a number of years, leaving just before Christmas to spend the holidays at Niles. Death was due to pneumonia which developed following an attack of the flu. Funeral services were held Thursday morning from the home of Mrs. White, interment to be made in the cemetery at Niles. Comrade L. L. Trask was a splendid character, the idealization of the Christian soldier and gentleman. Born in Ohio in 1841 he spent his boyhood days in that state. Enlisting in the Union army at the beginning of the Civil war, he served with distinction until the end of that historic struggle. Shortly after the close of the war he came to Michigan, locating at Pewamo, where he owned and operated a bank and grain elevator for a number of years. The Trask family were prominent in the affairs of that village, both Mr. and Mrs. Trask being active church workers and interested in everything connected with the welfare of the community. During the late 80’s they moved to Carson City where Mr. Trask opened and operated a bank for some time. It was during the period when the Western immigration fever swept over the country, the family being caught in the drift that took them to the Pacific coast, their final destination being near Aberdeen, Washington, where they were located many years until the death of Mrs. Trask. Surviving are three sons, Harper, of Illinois; Richard, of Aberdeen, and Morris of Niles; two daughters, Ellinor, who lives with her father at St. Johns, and Mrs. White, at whose home he passed away in the fullness of his years, a beloved friend and neighbor, a father whose princely precepts made him near and dear in the family circle.
