Dana was born in Detroit on July 7, 1945 and when he was five years old, the family moved to Allen Park. He graduated from Allen Park high school in 1963, attended Henry Ford community college for two years and then continued at Eastern Michigan University earning a degree in elementary education in 1967. He loved teaching and working with children and first taught at Fairlane elementary School in Taylor. Several years later, because of his love of country life, he moved to Sunfield and taught elementary school in Lake Odessa. (As a child he spent many weeks in the summer visiting his great-grandparents in Sunfield and his dream was to live there someday.) He enjoyed teaching children the three R's, but also taught his students cooking, poetry, and very important to him, etiquette and the social graces. Because he inspired and encouraged his students, many of them would come back years later to visit with him. He retired after over 30 years of teaching and spent his retirement years entertaining family and friends in his Victorian era home including taking people for rides in his several vintage cars. Children loved to visit as he always had kitties, chickens and other animals around his farm. He especially enjoyed demonstrating many of his phonographs and other antique musical instruments for his visitors. He loved to bake and cook and there were usually fresh baked goodies at his house for who ever happened to stop by. His home was always a welcoming place to visit. He loved the Lord Jesus Christ, began attending Sunday school as a young child and then, as a teenager, he was very active in Christian endeavor, a Christian youth organization. He continued church attendance throughout his life and enjoyed lively discussions about the scriptures. Dana's loving spirit will remain with those whose lives were touched by his humor, hospitality and kindness, forever! Surviving are his cousins, Lana (Alan) Griffin and Paul (Margaret) Traub, their children and grandchildren, his many friends and his kitties, Victor and Victoria. A celebration of Dana's life was held Friday, Aug. 27, 2021 at First Congregational United Church of Christ, 106 S. Bostwick St., Charlotte, MI 48813, with Pastor Bruce Schoup, Rev. Becky Ebb-Speese and Fr. Charlon Mason officiating. Eulogy by Alan Brodbeck. A luncheon followed the service. Those wishing gathered (following the luncheon) at the Sunfield Cemetery to view his final resting place and for a short service led by Pastor Becky Ebb-Speese of Zion Lutheran Church. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his name to Alzheimer's Association, Compassius Hospice of Lansing or the charity of your choice. The family has entrusted arrangements to Peters & Murray Funeral Home, Grand Ledge.
