Feb. 28, 2017 HAZEL OPAL TRAVIS 1929-2017 Hazel Opal Travis, 87, died Feb. 24, 2017, at Heartland health care in Ionia, MI. Opal was born Sept. 29, 1929 in Ionia to Alzie and Ruth (Clark) Priest. She is survived by her children, Susan McDonald (DeWitt), Donna Travis (Gaylord), Christine Travis (Ionia), and Timothy (Carol Frederick) Travis (Ionia); sisters, Wilma Wright (Ionia) and Norma Triggs (Potterville). Also surviving are grandchildren, William Newcomb, Andgela Newcomb, Jennifer (Donald) Jorgensen, Bradley McDonald, Kevin (Olivia) McDonald; great- grandchildren, Emily Jorgensen, Alexis Jorgensen, Grace Jorgensen, Ellee McDonald, Seth Newcomb, Halley Newcomb, Logan Newcomb, Aiden Newcomb; and two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Merritt D. Travis, sisters Gladys Wombolt, Edna Myers, Loretta Leiter, Ferne Simmons, and brothers Walter Priest and Melvin Priest. Opal is also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins. Opal was a lifelong Ionia resident and graduated from ionia High School. Her first job was at the Ionia Theater, where she met her husband. While raising her family she worked at Michigan Bell Telephone Company as a switchboard operator, worked at Montgomery Ward and finally at the Ionia State Hospital Riverside Correctional Facility until her retirement in 1987. She loved to travel, having been to Germany, England and Mexico and all over the United States. Opal loved her family and her many friends, all of whom she enjoyed talking to and spending time with. She loved feeding the birds and loved animals, especially her miniature schnauzer Kleine. Opal's family wishes to thank the many wonderful and caring people at Heartland health care of Ionia for the many years of care and kindness.
