He was born Nov. 30, 1919, in Sunfield Township, to Grover O. and Etta V. Nead Travis. He served as a tank commander in the U.S. Army during World War II having reached the rank of Sergeant. His tour of duty included Africa and Italy. He married Lavona J. Sible on Oct. 21, 1945. She preceded him in death on Aug. 10, 1963. He later married Helena M. Ruehs on Aug. 16, 1964 in Ionia. Bernie retired as director of purchasing from Gibson Products Corporation. He is survived by wife, Helena, of Lewisville; daughter Kathryn Harger of Greenville; eight grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and step-children, Marlene Seader, Carolyn Dunlap, Barbara Curtis and Dan Ruehs. Funeral services are 1 p.m. Wednesday at Lamb of God Lutheran Church in Flower Mound, Tx. Graveside services are 2 p.m. Saturday at Balcom Cemetery in Ionia. The family request memorial contributions be made to Lamb of God Lutheran Church Building Fund, 1401 Crosstimbers Rd., Flower Mound, Tx. 75028.
