June 21, 1909 Aged Woman Chose Asphyxiation to End Her Life – Aged Man Jumped Into River. WOMAN WAS DESPONDENT Two sexagenarians, both having apparently committed suicide, was Death’s toll in Grand Rapids yesterday. Asphyxiation bearing all evidences of having been carefully premeditated, caused the death of Mrs. Hannah Tunmore, aged 60, whose body was discovered with life all but gone in the bathroom of her residence, 38 Third street, ate 7 o’clock yesterday morning. AGED WOMAN WAS DESPONDENT Ill-Health cause of Mrs. Tunmore’s Death – Was to Visit Son. Mrs. Tunmore had lived on Third street since separating from her husband, William J. Tunmore, a patternmaker, last September. She rented rooms in the upper portion of a residence owned by Christopher Harastead. Early yesterday morning Mrs. Harastead took breakfast to Mrs. Tunmore’s apartments, as she has been accustomed to doing daily, and when her summons received no answer she searched the house finding the body in the bathroom with the gas flowing freely from an open jet. Mrs. Tunmore was clothed only in her night railment and that she wished to make death certain and quick was evident by the care with which preparation had been made. The shade had been removed from the gas jet and the brass cap unscrewed giving the flow greater volume. All doors and windows had been carefully closed so that none of the gas might escape from the room. It is said that Mrs. Tunmore, who had been a rheumatic sufferer for along ti me, had been exceedingly despondent of late because of ill-health and domestic trouble. Although it is stated that she had previously made no threats of attempting suicide, it is said that she had been slightly unbalanced mentally for some time. Of late, her troubles had seemed to worry her unusually. Recently she received a letter from her son, Ernest Burroughs of Libertyville, Ill., in which he asked her to come and make her home with him. That she anticipated doing so is evident, as Saturday she sent him a postal stating that she would start for Chicago Monday morning and requesting him to meet her there. Her suitcase partially prepared for the trip, was discovered in her sleeping room. In addition to the son, Mrs. Tunmore is survived by her husband, who resides at 185 Turner street, from whom she had been separated, a cousin, Mrs. Hiram Webber of 90 South Ionia street, and a niece, Mrs. Frederick M. Abbot, of 66 Park avenue. When seen last night Mr. Tunmore showed little feeling in regard to his wife’s suicide. “Since she left me last September,” he said, “I have had nothing whatever to do with her and have not seen her since last winter. I had a lot of trouble with her. I don’t know why she should have wanted to kill herself.” Additional Comments: #1 Lloyd Burroughs – divorced 1881 #2 Mr. Wm. D.
