Two former Ionia people were instantly killed at Kalamazoo Friday night when an eastbound train struck their automobile at a crossing four miles west of Kalamazoo. The dead are George Turner, 54, and Mrs. Turner, 53, of Wilmette, Illinois. Both formerly were residents of Ionia. Turner was a senior partner in the firm of Turner & Saunders of Chicago. Both were dead when the train crew reached the car wreckage. The car was being driven toward Kalamazoo. Coroner R. G. Cook of Kalamazoo declared he believed Mrs. Turner was driving the car because a woman’s shoe was found locked in the pedals and floor boards of the car. The bodies were taken to Kalamazoo. Mr. Turner as a young man lived in Ionia and went from here to war service. Mrs. Turner was Miss Nina Pennell whose mother was a member of the Kelsey family, one of the most prominent in Ionia county. George Turner service in the world war and when it was over they lived for a short time in Boston, Mass. From there Mr. and Mrs. Turner moved to Wilmette, Illinois, where he owned and operated at the time of his death, a wholesale store which dealt in china. Mr. Turner’s parents were former residents of Ionia and lived on Lafayette street. His father had a novelty store on Main street, located where the Frank’s store is. Mrs. Turner’s mother was Mrs. Lillian Kelsey of Grand Rapids, daughter of E.P. Kelsey, who formerly owned the farm now the Ed Townsend farm. Mrs. Lillian Kelsey died several months ago in Grand Rapids. Mr. and Mrs. Turner are survived by one son, 14 years old, and his mother, who lived with them.
