Almon Tuttle - Obituary Almon Tuttle, son of Nelson and Sophia Tuttle, was born in Palmyra, Portage county, Ohio, November 1, 1835, and died at the Soldiers’ home in Grand Rapids, Michigan, at 8:30 a.m., April 24, 1909. In 1846, he moved with his father’s family to Ionia county, Michigan, and settled on a farm three miles south of Ionia. In September 1855, he was united in marriage with Rhoda Jane Copley, with whom he lived until her decease March 27, 1908. Their children were four in number of whom two sons are living, Dr. L.N. Tuttle, of Holland, Michigan, and N.S. Tuttle, of Ionia township; also in his father’s family three sisters - Mrs. Mary Ferguson, Mrs. Wm. Adgate, Mrs. Martha Benedict. During the pioneer days he was actively engaged in clearing land and improving the country and followed farming constantly excepting the time spent in military service in the great rebellion. Answering the call to arms, he became a private in company A., Captain Minier’s Twenty-first Michigan volunteers infantry, and was mustered into the U.S. service September 2, 1862, to serve three years. He was discharged from the service April 21, 1863 on the surgeon’s certificate of disability. His army experience included forced marches, exposure in the open field several battles, and a continued sickness ruinous to health, all of which strengthened his patriotism and his love of home. In politics he was loyal to the republican party, but made his last visit to Ionia expressly to vote for local option. The last year of his life was passed in the Michigan Soldiers’ home, from which he made several leisurely visits among relatives and friends. While at the home his attention was constantly directed to the subject of religion by the services held there and his leisure hours were spent in contemplation of religious themes. He finally selected a text as his favorite one and placed it inside his watch case for reference. It was, “He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life; and he that believeth not the Son, shall not see life, but the wrath of God abideth on him.” John 3:36. Converted in early life he became a member of the M.E. church to which he remained loyal to the end. He was also a member of the Masonic order, and of the G.A.R., whose benefits and privileges he highly prized and concerning whom he always spoke a word of praise. His earthly life has ended and we trust his heavenly life has begun. Words of eulogy we leave to others. His life and example will be in our memory, and we have reason to believe that his soul shall rest in peace. The funeral was from the LeValley M.E. church on Monday, April 26. Rev. E.E. Sprague officiated and the bearers were from Wm. H. Borden post, No. 211, of Ionia, of which he was a member. They were Geo. Corey, W.E. Normington, J. Greenman, H.C. Myers, A.J. Cook, and N.L. Brookins. Burial in the Tuttle cemetery.
