Nov. 6,1914 Jay A. Tuttle, eldest son of James G. and Huldah Tuttle, was born at Canandaigua, Ontario Co., Y. Y. January 26, 1847, and departed this life at Ionia, Mich., October 27, 1914. His father died when he was 14 years old, and two years later he enlisted in the war of the Rebellion in Co. C, 146 N. Y. Infantry. He was wounded at the Battle of the Wilderness May 6, 164, and was discharged from service, May 29, 1865. He came to Michigan in the fall of 1868 and to Orleans, this county, in May 1871, and has resided in this county since that time. He was married to Miss Cornelia Post, Oct. 14, 1871 and to this union was born one son who died at the age of eight years. His wife Cornelia died Jan. 6, 1888. He was again married, April 11, 1891 to Miss Kate Chadwick of Orleans this county who with their daughter Miss May are left to mourn the loss of a kind and affectionate husband and father. He also leaves one brother H. G. Tuttle of Bristol Center, N. Y., three sisters, Mrs. Marsha Burd of Academy, N. Y. Mrs. S. E. Stanton, Penn Yan, N. Y. and Mrs. Anna Butler of South Ionia. The funeral services were very largely attended at the residence on Friday afternoon at 1:30 being conducted by Dr. Hoag of the M. E. Church. The music was furnished by Mrs. Eugene Smith and Mrs. Harry Spencer. The bearers were six nephews, J. N. Butler, D. A. Alexander, A. R. Moore, B. R. Moore, N. E. Post and Darwin Post. The G. A. R. and Masons attended in a body. The ritualistic services of the G. A. R. being very impressive. There was a great profusion of beautiful flowers which gave testimony of a good citizen, who so suddenly was taken from their midst. Interment was in the family lot in Green’s Cemetery.
