Feb. 16, 1950 NELSON S. TUTTLE DIES AT FARM HOME WAS WELL KNOWN IONIA TWP. RESIDENT Nelson Samuel Tuttle passed away at his farm home in Ionia township Tuesday evening, Feb. 14, at 6:40 o’clock, at the age of 89 years, 10 months and 22 days. The son of Almon and Rhoda Jane Tuttle, he was born March 23, 1860, in a log cabin on the Tuttle Road, two miles east of the farm home where he has resided most of his life. His parents moved to the present Tuttle farm when he was two years of age. During his life on this farm he has seen many changes. As a young man he drove an ox team and helped clear the timber and plow the land for the first time. He was the advance from the ox cart to the horse and carriage, the automobile and later the airplane. He took his first airplane ride in 1927, while visiting his sons at Wichita, Kans. One of his earliest recollections was seeing his father return in 1864 after serving with the Union Army in the Civil War. Years later one son served in World War I. He attended Ionia High School and graduated from there in the class of 1884. He attended the University of Michigan and Michigan State College, after which he taught school for several years. On July 9, 1890, he married E. Maud Willis of Coburg, Ontario, Canada. He entered the ministry of the Methodist Episcopal Church and served for 14 years. He came back to the farm to care for his parents and has since resided there. He again entered the teaching profession and later served as a guard at the Michigan State Reformatory for 17 years. He was a familiar figure as he walked to and from work for a number of years. Mr. Tuttle retired to the farm home, which has been in the family for over 400 years, in 1937, where he resided with his son Donald and family. From 1913 to 1916 he served as rural letter carrier on routes north and south of Ionia. An ardent student of the Bible and foreign languages, he spent much of his time reading and writing. His wife, E. Maud, preceded him in death Oct. 16, 1931. A daughter, Margaret L., passed away Dec. 26, 1916, at the age of 19 years. Surviving are four sons, Donald S. and Norman A., of Ionia township; Dr. Clyde E. and Dr. Victor A. of Wichita, Kans.; six grandchildren and two great- grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at LeValley Methodist Church at 1:30 Thursday afternoon, Feb. 16. Burial in Tuttle Cemetery.
