He was in quite good health during the summer months, and was sick only a few days. Monday afternoon of this week he began to fail quite rapidly, and continued until the noon hour Tuesday, September 5, when death came. He was born in Brunswick, Germany, June 24, 1833, and came to this country when but 12 years old, with his parents, who settled at Evansville, Ind. Later they resided at Elberfield, Ind., and finally he moved with his family to Ionia, in 1880, where he has since resided. He was married in 1858 to Catherine Hubble of Carmie, Ill., and to this union was born one daughter, Mrs. Frank Marquette. He was converted to the Christian faith in his 18th year, and united with the Evangelical church to which he has been a faithful member ever since. During the Civil war he enlisted as a private in Co. II, 74th Indiana Infantry, and was a member of the local G.A. R. post. He counted life not too dear to sacrifice for his God, his home and his native land. Mr. Ude was a highly respected citizen, a good neighbor and a kind loving husband and father. At different intervals he filled important offices in the church, was greatly interested in the spread of the gospel and gave literally for its support. His exemplary life witnesses unto the good he has done. Father, mother, three brothers and one sister have preceded him in death. He leaves to mourn his loss, wife, daughter, grandson John Marquette, one sister, Mrs. Carline Frieling of Evansville, Ind., besides any relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 o’clock at the house and 2:00 o’clock at the Evangelical church, Friday afternoon, Rev. J. S. Deabler officiating. Interment at Highland Park.
