January 23,1919 ANOTHER CO.D MEMBER IS KILLED IONIA'S COMPANY D IS ABSORBED BY U.S.--DISAPPEARS AS NATIONAL GUARD Word has been received here of the death in France of Dan Ulrich, who left here with CO.D. Ulrich was a son of Mrs.Chester Warner of Maple street and was killed in action during the fighting of the fall. One fact remains apparent as matters stand now in regard to the National Guard and that is that Ionia is without a military organization. Federalization of the guard for war purposes which was carried out when Co D was mustered into the service in 1917, wiped the company out of existence so far as Ionia and Michigan is concerned, and when the members are discharged they will return to private life without any obligation either to the state or federal governments. According to Secretary Baker the future of the National Guard will depend upon what the government may do regarding a permanent military policy, Should some system of universal military training be worked out it is probable that the National Guard will never be revived. In the meantime CO.D has completely lost its identity by being merged into the forces of the United States. Before it can take its place again in the federalized National Guard it must be reconstituted and again presented to the government for recognition.
