He was the son of Thomas and Elizabeth Underhill. They were Quakers and of English descent. Their ancestors were among the first settlers on Long Island. When but a small boy he went with his parents to Cayuga Co., N.Y. and remained there until seventeen years old when he went to Ridgeway, Orleans Co., and they to Royalton, Niagara, N.Y. In 1855 he came to Michigan and made a home for himself in Fulton township, Gratiot Co. He was married to Elizabeth Pratt, Sept. 25, 1860. In 1861 Mr. Underhill enlisted in Co. M, 1st Mich. Engineers and Mechanics, and served until the close of the war. He was converted in 1905 under the labors of Rev. M. Maxfield an evangelist from Springfield, Mass. This was in the later part of his life but, “At evening time it shall be light,” and Uncle John has been faithful and true. He has strictly observed the keeping of the Seventh Day Sabbath since 1905. He was a good citizen, a kind husband, an honest upright neighbor and was loved and respected by all who knew him. He leaves to mourn his loss a wife, one aged sister in N.Y. and one nephew, besides other relatives and friends. The funeral services were held at the house Friday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Wm. Judd, assisted by Rev. D.B. Davidsen. Interment in Lyons cemetery.
