He as born in Dearborn on November 30, 1927 the son of William and Irene (Whittaker) Underwood. Red was a veteran of World War II, being one of the last six people to be drafted in Manistee County. Mr. Underwood also spent three years in Korea with the 725th division ordinance. He was appointed by President John F. Kennedy, and was approved by Congress to the position of Post Master. He served as Post Master of Bretheren and Hart, before retiring in 1989 as the Post Master of Ionia. Red was a member of the Onekema Hospital Board, the Kalava Lions Club, and Rotary Club in Hart and Ionia, was an Ambassador for the Ionia Chamber of Commerce, and held many positions with the First United Methodist Church. He married his wife Barbara on September 19, 1953 and she survives him. Also surviving are daughters, Bambi (Randy) Powell of Springfield, and Terri (Scott) Warda of Oxford; grandsons, known to Red and the rest of the family as the ABC’s, Adam and Benjamin Warda and Christopher Powell; brothers, Alfred (Virginia) Underwood and Raymond (Donna) Underwood; sisters, Deanise (Robert) Wilson and Joan (Devere) Randall; many nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held Sunday at 3 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church of Ionia with Rev. Martin Culver, Pastor, officiating. For those desiring, memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church in memory of Everett “Red” Underwood.
