Death claimed the life of one of the city’s oldest residents, in point of years 
of residence, on Sunday noon, when Lewis C. Upson, aged 74 years passed away at 
his home on M-44 in the southwest part of the city.  Mr. Upson was the son of 
Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Carey Upson, pioneer residents of this community, and was 
born on the farm where he had always made his home and where death came to him 
Sunday.

For many years Mr. Upson was identified with the ice and fuel business in this 
city and before the days of mechanical refrigeration had large ice houses on 
the banks of ponds and lakes in this vicinity in which the annual harvest of 
ice was stored each winter to provide refrigeration facilities for the people 
during the next summer and each winter saw him as the head of a considerable 
force of men engaged in cutting and storing the ice crop.

Later on he was associated with the late F.W. Howard in the Belding Coal and 
Ice Company, but with the development of the process of mechanical 
refrigeration, the natural ice business died out and after disposing of his ice 
and fuel interests Mr. Upson retired to his farm where he devoted much of his 
time to the raising and training of racing stock horses.  He was an ardent 
horseman and took much pride in his animals. 

Surviving is the widow, the former Rose Eichenberg.

Funeral services were held at the Victor Ellis funeral home on Tuesday 
afternoon at 2 o’clock with Rev. H.S. Ellis officiating and burial was in 
Otisco cemetery.  Pallbearers were M. Clifton Greene, Robert Wells, Al. Wells, 
Fred Reusser, Aubrey Stewart and Ray Curtis.
