Upton, 68, for 50 years an Ionia county banker, died suddenly at his home in Lyons at 1 p.m. Sunday only 30 minutes after he suffered a heart attack. Although he had not been in good health for several years, Mr. Upton had been at work each day as teller at the Ionia State Savings bank and worked until closing time Saturday. He remarked to bank workers Saturday as he put on his topcoat that he was glad Sunday was nearby and that he would be able to sleep somewhat later than usual. Funeral services will be conducted from the Upton home Wednesday afternoon at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Gerald Jacobs, pastor of the Lyons Methodist church officiating. Burial will be at the Lyons cemetery. A Masonic funeral will be conducted. Born April 5, 1877, at Utica, Mr. Upton came to Lyons 50 years ago becoming a partner of the Ruel and Upton Banking company. The two men operated the Lyons Savings Bank for several years until the death of J.H. Ruel. Mr. Upton then continued the bank until 1930 when it was closed. In 1930 Mr. Upton became associated with the Ionia State Savings bank where he has been employed for the past 15 years. At Lyons Mr. Upton had been township clerk and treasurer several times, being active in the civic life of the community. He was a member of the Methodist church. At Lyons he belonged to the Masonic orders including the Lyons chapter of which he was at one time high priest, the Eastern Star and in Ionia was a member of the Knights Templar. He was also a member of the Lyons Fishing and Hunting club which recently was organized. Surviving are the widow, two daughters, Mrs. Ford E. Weaver, jr., and Mrs. Franklin Hansbarger, both at home, and a grandson, David Upton Weaver. A brother, Frank, lives in Washington, Mich.
