RETIRED MERCHANT DIES UNEXPECTEDLY
Fred A. Urtel, 78, retired merchant and former village president, passed away at his
home on Jordan lake st. Thursday evening. His death unexpected although he had been in
ill health for several years.

A native of Germany, born there March 26, 1879, he came to the Hart area when three
years old. In 1913 he came here when he purchased a grocery and dry goods store of
Joe Breese, which he operated until April 5, 1947 when he sold the business to Leroy
Catt, because of ill health. He also carried a line of boats and shoes in connection with
the other merchandise.

Mr. Urtel was village president for eight years from 1916-1924 and was defeated by a
small majority by E. G. Garlinger. During Mr. Urtel's administration main streets was
paved and the sidewalk project was started. He served for two years on the village council
following his term of office as president.

He was affiliated with the  Lutheran Church and was a life member of both the F & AM
No. 295 and the Order of Eastern Star chapter, No 315 and a member of the IOOF lodges.

Surviving are the wife, Nellie E.; two daughters, Mrs. Florence Dickman of Zeeland
and Mrs. Ruth Springer of Lansing; a son George of Alma; a sister Mrs. L. Munger of Hart and
several grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Monday at 2 p.m. at the Pickens chapel under auspices of
the F. & AM lodge with burial in lakeside cemetery. Rev. A. J.Pitman officiated.
