Feb. 28, 2017 JOHN VAARBERT 1928-2017 John C. Vaarberg, 88 of Ionia, passed away with his family by his side, Feb. 23, 2017. He was born Nov. 8, 1928 in Sneek, Friesland, The Netherlands, the son of Willem B. and Maria C.J. (VanDerWal) Vaarberg. John served in the Royal Dutch Marines. He married Ann Holkema Nov. 27, 1947 in the Netherlands. John and Ann came to the United States in 1952 and proudly gained citizenship in 1963. John was an Industrial engineer for Chrysler at the Lyons Trim Plant, and plants in Michigan city, IN and Lima, OH. he was later employed by General Dynamics Services Company at their Detroit Operations and their Egyptian tank Program in Cairo, Egypt. John was a charter member of the Berlin Orange Fire Department. He was a member of LeValley United Methodist Church, Michigan United Conservation Club, and the Ionia County Fishing and Hunting Club, where he served two terms as President. John was a great outdoorsman, enjoying hunting and fishing, and very talented at skeet shooting. He was a volunteer for the Ionia county Victim Advocates and Habitat for Humanity. John and Ann loved to travel. John is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Ann Vaarberg of Ionia; son William (Sherry) Vaarberg and children, John William and Cassidy; daughter Maria (Gregory) Droste and children, Jessica (Christopher) Anglin and Seth Droste; daughter Carla (Louis) Schut; and sister-in-law Adriana Miliusis. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister-in-law, and two brothers- in-law. Special thanks to the staff of Ionia Green Acres for their loving care; also to the the staff of Great Lakes Caring Hospice for their comfort care. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m., Monday, Feb. 27, at LeValley, United Methodist Church with Pastor David Flagel officiating; Interment at Balcom Cemetery. Visitation will be held Sunday 2 to 5 p.m. at Lake Funeral Home in Ionia. Memorial contributions may be made to Ionia County Fishing and Hunting Club.
