VANALLEN, IONIA PIONEER DRUGGIST, DEAD Had Been in Business Here for the Past 47 Years and a Resident of Ionia Since 1871 Herman VanAllen, an Ionia druggist for 47 years died early Thursday morning at his home on Lafayette street. Mr. VanAllen, who had been in ill health for a year or more, was taken ill at 3:30 Thursday morning, death following this attack. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 Saturday morning, Rev. Fr. White of St. John’s Episcopal church officiating. Burial will be in Highland Park cemetery. Mr. VanAllen went into business for himself in Ionia in 1881 following the years when he was employed in the drug store of Gundrum Bros. He remained in business until the fall of 1926 when he retired, being succeeded by Harry McGowan who had been in partnership with him since 1911, and who conducts the business in the same location. Mr. VanAllen was born April 21, 1855 in Starkey, N. Y., and came to Ionia when he was 16 years of age, receiving his degree in pharmacy shortly thereafter. He leaves three nieces, Mrs. G. B. Wardle and Mrs. G. L. Yates of Ionia, and Mrs. E. M. Davis of Pittsburgh and a niece by marriage, Mrs. Marguerite Morse of Dallas, Texas, who has been visiting here for the past two weeks. Ionia Sentinel-Standard Monday August 22, 1927 Herman VanAllen Buried Saturday Funeral services for Herman VanAllen were attended from the residence on Lafayette street, Saturday morning at 10:30, and was conducted by Rev. Fr. White of St. Johns Episcopal church. The bearers were K. R., Smith, Sr. Fred Tower, Dee Wilson, Harry McGowan, Fred VanderHayden and George Nichols. Burial was made at the Highland Park Cemetery.
