Maxine Hendershot, 9-year-od child of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Hendershot of Lyons, was rescued after going down twice, by H. B. Horner, electrician. The VanAnem child did not come to the surface at all. Her body was recovered about 25 minutes later by the efforts of neighbors. The accident occurred between 6:00 and 7:00 o’clock. Agnes and Maxine were together close to the gravel pit on the west side above the dam. Little Olle Benedict, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lee Benedict, was near them and there were a number of boys bathing at a considerable distance. The two little girls waded out some distance and stumbled into the hole left by the old gravel pit, the entire bottom being gravelly at this place. Mr. Horner, seeing the children disappear under water, ran a distance of about forty rods to the place where they had gone in, and then made his rescue of Maxine Hendershot. The body of Agnes was recovered later. Mr. and Mrs. Cloyd VanAnem are living on the farm of Louis Faxon, about two houses from the corner of the road close to the dam. They came there last fall from Orange township. They have six children, one girl and two boys being older than the drowned child. Agnes is said to have been an unusually active and helpful child, doing work on the farm which would ordinarily be considered beyond the years and strength of a girl of her age.
