Ionia Sentinel Standard, 2002

George Newton Vance, 89, beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-
grandfather, passed away Saturday, Nov. 23, 2002, in Sebring, Fla.

He was born July 11, 1913, in Pewamo, the son of Edward E. and Lena (Blackmer) 
Vance.  He lived his entire life in the Ionia area.  He owned and operated the 
former Vance Agency for more than 42 years.  He was very active in the 
community, serving on the Ionia City Council for 16 years, was instrumental in 
the formation of the Ionia County Historical Society and one of the founders of 
the Ionia Industrial Fund.
He was a life member of the Ionia Elks Club, Ionia Rotary Club and the 
Horseless Carriage Club.  His many hobbies included restoring vintage 
automobiles, playing bridge, golfing in his earlier years and spending time 
with his family at his home on Long Lake.

He is survived by his loving wife, Marcella Vance; son Edward Gove and Sharon 
Vance; daughter Valerie K. Vance; son-in-law Larry Kinzie; step-children Dagmar 
and Sam Mikko-Fortier, Martha and John Mikko-Eicher, Karl and Debbie Mikko; 10 
grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Fannie Hutchings.  He 
was preceded in death by his parents and daughter Joanne Vance Kinzie.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Lake Funeral Home in 
Ionia.  Interment in Balcom Cemetery.

Visitation is Friday evening from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home.  
Anyone wishing may make memorial contributions to Helping Hands Hospice of 
Ionia.
