Vance: Chancey B. Vance3 was born June 30th, 1824, in the town of Startsey, Yates County, New York. He was the 5th son of a family of ten children, consisting of six boys and four girls, all of whom are now dead, except two sisters: Mrs. Polly McVeigh of Carson City and Mrs. Jane Millis, of Whitewater, Wis. In the year 1837 his two brothers, Jack and William Vance, came to Michigan to make homes for themselves here in what was at that time a wilderness. Five years later the subject of this sketch followed them here, traveling from Detroit to his brother’s home on East Plains with an ox team. The roads in those days were far different from our broad highways of today and the trip from the metropolis proved to be a long and dangerous one. As he often used to express it, “there was only one mud hole and that extended the entire distance.” He remained with his brothers on the Plains until 1846 when he returned to New York and in October of that year was married to Miss Irene Loomis, as sister of Henry Loomis, a former resident of this village. The next 10 years following his marriage to Miss Loomis he remained in that state and then the western fever got hold of him again and they came to Michigan and located on a farm on East Plains now owned by Theodore Fedewa. He lived the life of a farmer until 1882 when he came to Pewamo and purchased the L. L. Trask place, which remained his home until he passed away May 18, 1912, aged 87 years, 10 months and 18 days. Mr. Vance’s first wife died Friday, March 29, 1886. On June 16, 1887 he was married to Mrs. Hattie Collister, living with her in happy wedlock until February 22, 1903, when she was taken from him in death. February 9th, 1904, Mr. Vance was again married, this time to Mrs. Mary Downhum of St. Johns, who survives him, and who tender- (Do not have the rest of the obit.)
