Tragedy at Fire

Geo. E. Vance Dies While Saving Goods.

The dwelling of W. C. Etson, situate about 1 mile east of Lyons, was destroyed 
by fire Tuesday forenoon, and George E. Vance gave up his life in an effort to 
save some of the contents.

Mr. Vance drove into the yard a few moments before the fire was discovered and 
he and Mr. Etson were talking about a horse he was driving, when on looking 
towards the house smoke was seen issuing through the roof.  Mrs. Etson and a 
friend were waiting for Mr. Etson to come in and eat dinner and knew nothing 
of the fire until the men came running in and on examination the upper part of 
house was found to be in flames.  Efforts were at once directed to saving the 
furniture and amid the excitement and heavy lifting Mr. Vance was overcome and 
died in the granary door, near the house, where he had evidently sought a 
place to rest.  He was dead when Mrs. Etson found him, only a moment or two 
elapsing between the time she last saw him and his death.  Every effort was 
made to revive him, Dr. DeVore being with him within half an hour after death.

Fire is supposed to have caught from the chimney.  Nearly all the goods were 
removed, but the house was a total loss.  Insurance on dwelling $500 and on 
contents $100.  Mr. and Mrs. Etson will make their home in Lyons for the 
present.  While they regret the loss of their home, that is as nothing 
compared to the tragic death of their friend and neighbor, the memory of which 
will cast a cloud over their lives.
