August 23, 1923 Former Pewamo Boy Dies After Long Illness Mrs. Katherine Vance, of Pewamo, was advised Monday that her son Art D. Vance, had passed away Sunday morning at the hospital at Poughkepsie, N. Y., where he had been for over a year following a nervous breakdown due to overwork. The remains will be shipped to Pewamo and funeral services held, contingent upon arrival of the body, possibly this afternoon, from the Methodist church in Pewamo. Art. D. Vance was the youngest son of William and Katherine Vance, pioneer residents of East Plains, Lebanon township, Clinton county. As a member of the famous Lebanon band he became proficient in music and after the band had broken up followed music as a profession in wider circles. For a number of years he was connected with some of the largest bands in the country. From that work it was only natural the he graduate into vaudeville work and at the time he was stricken down he was playing the Keith circuit. Ionia County News- Thurs. Aug. 30, 1923 Funeral Services For Arthur Vance Were held last Thursday Funeral services for the late Arthur D. Vance, whose death occurred at Poughkepsie, N.Y., on Sunday morning, August 19, were held last Thursday from the M.E. church at Pewamo. Rev. Mather, pastor of the church, officiated. Burial was made in the family lot in East Plains cemetery, which is the burying ground for several generations of the Vance family, several of the brothers having settled in that part of Lebanon in the early days of the township. Arthur D. Vance was born in East Plains on July 24, 1876. He received his education in the district school at a short distance from the old homestead on the Pewamo-Hubbardston road, later going to the public schools at Hubbardston,. many years ago the family left the farm, just south of Matherton, and came to Pewamo to reside, William Vance, father of the deceased, passing away several years ago, William Vance, Jr., was killed while working with a telephone crew outside Chicago about fifteen years ago, Mrs. Katherine Vance is the sole surviving member of the family. Those to attend the obsequies last Thursday were Mrs. Emmett Vance and Mrs. Oscar Crane, of Lyons; Mrs. Blanche Kellogg, of Lowell; Glen Ernst of Flint; Mrs. George Burhans and Mr. And Mrs.George Amsden, of Lansing; John Domny and daughter, and Mrs. Lillian Gibson of Detroit.
