VanderHeyden joined the innumerable band beyond the veil, at his home on West Main street, at 9:25 o’clock on Tuesday night, very unexpectedly, at age of 74 years and 4 months. While feeling the infirmities incident to his age, he was up and about, attending to his business affairs, up to the day of his demise. Mr. VanderHeyden was born on a farm in New York state on March 29, 1836. He became a resident of Ionia in 186? beginning the manufacture of building brick very soon thereafter, and at which he was measurably successful. The original plant was set up on the identical tract of land fronting on West Main street, where the son Fred H. is now conducting a like business. Viewing deceased as a man, in all the varied relations of life, we can pronounce his eulogy without the qualification of opposing opinion. He was easy of approach, affable, and kind, apparently carrying into his private life nothing of bitterness; he was honorable and just in all business affairs; he was a man of good habits, temperate and plain. It is these virtues, far more than genius, learning, or intellectual force, that make men of his kind worthy of high praise. Of the immediate family the wife, two daughters, and one son, survive, the children being Mrs. H.B. Webber and Fred H. VanderHeyden of this city, and Mrs. Dr. A.C. Halliday of Ocean Beach, California. The funeral of Wm. H. VanderHeyden will be held from the residence, 824 West Main street, on Saturday afternoon at 2 o’clock. Rev. Jas. E. Wilkinson will officiate. Interment in Oak Hill. The funeral service will be public to the friends of the family.
