Fred H. VanderHeyden, life-long resident of Ionia and former office manager of the Ypsilanti Reed Furniture company, died at his home at 926 West Main street about 8:30 p.m. Saturday. Mr. VanderHeyden had been in ill health for eight years and became critically ill only a few weeks ago. In the last few years he had nearly lost his sight. Funeral services are to be conducted from the home Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. with the Rev. George Rentschler officiating. Interment will be at the Oak Hill cemetery on Yeomans street. Attended Ionia Schools Mr. VanderHeyden was born in the house in which he died and he obtained his education in Ionia. He attended Ionia public schools and then Poucher Business College in Ionia. He bought out the VanderHeyden brick yards near his home from his father and operated that concern for some years. Later he became associated with the late Fred W. Green in the Ypsilanti Reed Furniture company which is now the Ionia Manufacturing company. He was named office manager of the company by Green and he served in that capacity for 12 years. While an official of the company he was elected supervisor of the Ionia second ward, a position he held for eight years. He left his work at the Ypsilanti Reed Furniture company when his large orchard which he had previously planted began to yield. He conducted the business of the orchard for years until his health failed when he sold it to outside interests. He retired from active business management at that time. Active Citizen Mr. VanderHeyden was an active citizen in Ionia affairs throughout his lifetime. He belonged to many organizations. They included the Ionia County Club, the Elks, Modern Woodmen and the Maccabees. He was a well educated man and an energetic reader. He was well informed on many subjects and had a keen sense of humor. During his last two years his illness confined him to his home and he was able to move about the house, but unable to leave the residence. His wife, Eleanor, a former Ionia public school teacher survives. Other survivors are two sisters, Mrs. H.B. Webber and Mrs. A.C. Holladay and a niece, Mary Ella Pool?, all of Long Beach, Calif. Mrs. VanderHayden has requested that no flowers be sent for the service and that those who ordinarily would send flowers make contributions for a memorial to the [unreadable] Ionia County Memorial hospital. Those contributions can be made through Raymond Coon, Ionia city clerk, and treasurer of the hospital board.
