Elsie M. VanDerske, 74, of Lyons died Jan. 20, 1999.

She was born in Lansing Dec. 21, 1924, the daughter of Bert and Jenny (Martin) 
Smithy. Mrs. VanDerske was a member of the Mayflower Society.

Surviving are her husband of 49 years, Seymour E.; daughter, Laurel VanDerske of Las

Vegas, Nev.; sons, Edward (Nel) of Grand Rapids, David (Kathy) of Portland, John 
(Sue) of Nashville, Tom (Jackie) of Portland, Steve (Andrea) VanDerske of Eagle, 
Raymond Hemminger of Bath, and Stanley (Jan) Hemminger of Ionia; 30 grandchildren; 
23 great-grandchildren; brother, Leo (Barbara Smith of Mason; and sister, Irene 
(Lowell) Townsend of Stockbridge.

Services will be held Sunday, Jan. 31, at 1 p.m. in the Portland United Methodist 
Church, 310 E. Bridge St., with the Rev. Scott K. Otis officiating. There will be no

visitation.
