Aug. 23, 1962 Owner Of Hardware Is Dead R. G. VanDeusen, 64, Ionia merchant and owner of the Ionia Hardware Company and former Mayor of Buchanan, died unexpectedly at the Ionia County Memorial hospital Thursday at 8:30 am. Ill Since he was removed to the hospital August 7, he had shown improvement until Wednesday when his condition became critical. A native of Elsie where he was born November 11, 1898, he came to Ionia when he purchased the Ionia Hardware form the estate of the late Fred T. Wortman in 1949. He attended St Johns public schools and following graduation was a student at the University of Michigan for two years. He became identified with Consumers Power Company and accepted a position in their Jackson office where he remained several years. He moved to Elkhart, Indiana for a short time and then opened a gasoline business in Buchanan where he remained about 20 years. While a resident of Buchanan he became a charter member of the Lions club and served that community as its Mayor. In Ionia he was a member of the Lions, the Masons, The Ionia County Fishing and Hunting club and a past president of the Ionia chamber of commerce a position to which he was elected in 1952. He was married to Leiah Turner of Williamston on October 17, 1925 at Lansing. Surviving are four children, Thomas of New York City, John a trooper of the Michigan State Police stationed at the Houghton Lake post; Rick of Ionia, who has been associated in the hardware business with his father; and a daughter Ann, a college student; two sisters, Mrs. Harold Millman of St. Johns and Mrs. Harry Dubey of Dallas, Texas; and four grandchildren. A memorial fund for the Presbyterian church has been established. Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced.
