August 9, 2009 Marilyn C. VanDeVenne Marilyn C. VanDeVenne, 71, of Portland, went home to be with the Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Aug. 1, 2009. She was born in Portland on Aug. 20, 1937 the daughter of August and Gertrude (Souter) VanDeVenne. She attended Cedarville University, Michigan State University, and Western Michigan University where she obtained her bachelor's and Master's Degrees. Further graduate work was taken at Pacific Azuza College, Aquinas College, Saint Mary's College, and the University of Michigan. She devoted her life to teaching in the fifth grade for 36 years and subbed in retirement. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Portland where she started the church library and was head librarian. She taught Sunday school, served on the Christian education committee, and was secretary of AWANA. She was a member of many organizations, the Christian Educator's Association International where she served on the field staff, Michigan Christian Teacher's fellowship, Michigan Education Association, Portland Education Association where she served in many capacities, National Education Association, Michigan Association of retired School Personnel, Michigan retired teacher's Association, and the National retired teacher's Association. She was a poet and author having several of her works published. She was honored by being nominated by students for inclusion of Who's Who Among Teachers multiple years. She was preceded in death by her parents, infant brother Arthur; brother, Thomas (Jean) VanDeVenne of Chariton, Iowa; and two nephews. Surviving are her brother, Joseph VanDeVenne of Mason; two nieces, Elizabeth (Craig) Koon, Grinnell, Iowa and Mary (Craig) Wittick of Des Moines Iowa; two nephews, David of White Lake, and Duane of Grand Rapids; five great nieces and nephews. A celebration of her home going was held Aug. 7 at the first Baptist church of Portland, with Rev. Tad Jameson and Rev. Donald Phillips, officiating. Interment took place at Greenwood cemetery in Fowlerville. Arrangements were entrusted to the Schrauben-Lehman Funeral Home, Portland. In Lieu of flowers, Memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church missionary fund in memory of Marilyn C. VanDeVenne.
