JOHN A.): THE IONIA DAILY SENTINEL-STANDARD, IONIA, MICH., JULY 29, 1935: "Deaths - Mrs. Mary M. (Mamie) VanGiesen, 67, wife of John A. VanGiesen, died Sunday morning at 3 o'clock at the farm in Orleans township. She had been in poor health for nearly a year, but was seriously ill for the past week. She was born at Brighton, April 5, 1868, the daughter of Edward and Julia Ann Treynor. Her mother died when she was a small child and when four years old with her younger sister, Ella, she went to live with an aunt, Mrs. Nell Rane at Whitmore. The following year she went to Orleans where she resided for more than 60 years. When she was 11 years old her father remarried and she and her sister made their home with him. Upon finishing school at Orleans she attended the Ionia high school and passed her teachers' examination. She taught for one year at the Blanchard school in Orleans township. She was married April 16, 1885, to John A. VanGiesen, of Orleans township, and for the past 50 years they have resided on the same farm formerly owned by Mr. VanGiesen's grandfather. Mr. and Mrs. VanGiesen celebrated their golden wedding anniversary early in the spring. She was a member of the State Road club, and although the past few years ill health had kept her in, she had always been an active worker in the community. She is survived by her husband, John A. VanGiesen; and son, Glenn R. VanGiesen, of Columbus, Ohio; two grandchildren, John and Elleen, of Columbus, Ohio; one niece, Miss Florence Treynor, who has made her home with them; one sister, Mrs. Ella Kitson Warner, of Grand Rapids; and three half brothers, Dave, Frank and Asa Treynor, all of Orleans township. Funeral services will be held from the farm home in Orleans township Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 with Rev. H. S. Ellis, of Belding, officiating. Interment will be at the family lot at Orleans cemetery."
