VanHorn, for three-quarters of a century a resident of Portland, died at 7:18 o’clock Saturday morning at the home of his son, George J. VanHorn, on Pleasant street, just a week to the day from the time his comrade and warm personal friend, Allen H. Moore, breathed his last. He had been ill with Bright’s disease for the past four years and his life had long been despaired of. Mr. VanHorn was born in Fremont, Ohio, June 8, 1842, came to Portland when he was two years of age and had made his home in this village continuously since. He was 77 years and five months old at the time of his death. He was a carpenter by trade and during his lifetime had built nine different houses on Pleasant street. Many of the rising generation remember him as the faithful old janitor at the High school building, where his kind ways won him many friends among the students. He had always been an active, interested member of the John Megarah Post, G.A.R., and commander of that organization a number of times and had been officer-of-the-day frequently. As commander of the Post he always appointed his late comrade and friend, Allen H. Moore, color bearer. Next year’s Decoration day parade will be lacking in its old time “snap” with Comrades VanHorn and Moore both dead. Mr. VanHorn was the last member of Company E, 27th Michigan Infantry, from Portland to volunteer for war service during the struggle between the north and the south. During his military career he took part in the famous battle of the Wilderness under General Grant, the battle of Spottsylvania Court House, North Ann, Permonkey, Bethesda Church, and was wounded at the battle of Cold Harbor June 8, 1864. Mr. VanHorn married Miss Arminda Lindley, of Portland, July 1, 1866, his wife having preceded him in death August 8, 1897. Two sons survive; George J. and Elmer C. VanHorn, of Portland. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at the Portland M. E. church, Chaplain Floyd L. Blowfield, the pastor, preaching the sermon in uniform. The pallbearers were Russell L. Cardy, Fred E. Delaney, Ben Briggs and Maurice Adgate, of the Dale E. Hyland Post, American Legion, and the color bearers were Basil Lowry, Arthur J. Williams and Jack Hill, of the same organization. Burial took place in the Portland cemetery.
