The Ionia Standard, Friday, April 20, 1888
Luther W. VanHorn died at his home in this place Monday evening, April 16th, 
1888, after a short illness, in the seventieth year of his life.  The funeral 
service will be held this forenoon at ten o’clock at the M. E. church.  The 
deceased was born in the state of New York in 1818.  He afterward went to 
Ohio, from which state he moved to this place forty-five years ago.  He was 
identified with the early history of Portland and possessed considerable land 
in its immediate vicinity.  He  was well and favorably known here, and was an 
upright and kind-hearted man.  His two sons, Charles and John VanHorn, are 
residents of this place.
