Lake Odessa Wave – 21 October 1937
Mrs. Grace VanHouten died suddenly at the home of her son Melvin Lapo in 
Berlin Township at the advanced age of 83 years.  Mrs. VanHouten was a 
resident of Lake Odessa many years, living at her home in the eastern part of 
the village until she became too feeble to care for her home, when she was 
taken to the home of her son Melvin Lapo where she died Saturday.

She had many friends here where she had lived twenty years and always greatly 
appreciated any kindness shown her.  She was born September 21, 1854, in 
Tompkins County, New York, to J. C and Anna Clark, was first married to Alonzo 
Lapo.  Later she married Henry VanHouten and they conducted a store in this 
village until Mr. VanHouten’s health failed.  After his death, she lived alone 
many years at noted above.
