Ionia Daily Sentinel-Standard, 21 Oct 1957

Gerald J. Van Houten, 21, died suddenly Sunday afternoon at 12:30 at the home 
of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Van Houten, 1555 South State road.  He was 
born September 6, 1936 and lived his entire life in Ionia.

While attending the Ionia high school he worked two years at the Ionia Camera 
shop and also worked one year at the Ionia Manufacturing Co.  He was graduated 
from Ionia high school with the class of 1955.

At the time of this death he was a student at Ferris Institute, Big Rapids and 
had returned Friday to the home of his parents for the weekend.

Besides his parents he is survived by two brothers, Gordon and David of Ionia, 
and a sister, Ruth Ann, student at Ferris Institute; maternal grandparents, Mr. 
and Mrs. Arthur Hopkins of Easton township, and his paternal grandfather, 
Bernie Van Houten of Ionia.

The body will be at the Phelps Funeral Chapel until noon Wednesday when it will 
be taken to the Evangelical United Brethren church of which he was a member.  
Services will be held from the church at 2 o’clock with the Rev. John F. Price 
officiating.  Interment will be in Balcom cemetery.
