He was born on February 20th ,1932, in Portland ,Michigan, the son of C.W. and Alma (Buck) VanHouten. Gordon married his high school sweetheart, Phyllis Martin, on June 16th, 1949. Gordon attended Easton United Methodist Church. He enjoyed playing his banjo at the Commission on Aging in Ionia. He was a member of “ The Proper Strangers,” a local band in the sixties, seventies, and eighties with Tom and Ted Hagen, and Wayne Wyckoff. He sold cars at Berger Motor Sales in Ionia and Wittenbach Sales and Service in Lowell. Gordon was a very special man to his family and friends. He loved being around people and made friends wherever he went. The greatest love in his life was his family, whom he would call everyday just to say “ I love you.” He was a devoted and adoring Grandpa. One of his greatest joys was attending his grandchildren's sports, concerts, and various activities. Gordon is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Phyllis VanHouten of Ionia. He will be lovingly remembered and deeply missed by his son Steven and Dianne VanHouten of Ionia; his daughter Deborah and Terry Stephens of Ionia , and his grandchildren, Jamie and Gail Stephens of Ionia, Mindy and Mark Braman of Ionia, Chad and Angela VanHouten of Grand Rapids, Todd VanHouten and fiance` Leslie Sawtell of Ionia, and Troy VanHouten of Ionia, and four beautiful great grand-daughters, Logan Marie Stephens, Alexandria Mae Stephens, Madeline Kaye Braman and Melayna Elaine Braman. He is also survived by his half -sisters, Alice (Rollin) Hill of Saranac, and Louella Meyers of Ionia, step-brother Dave (Pat) VanHouten of Ionia, step-sister Ruth Ann ( Richard) Sanft of Florida, and step-mother Ruth VanHouten of Florida. He was preceded in death by his parents and half-brother Bud White. In keeping with his wishes cremation has taken place, and a private family memorial service will be held. The family will receive relatives and friends on Friday, November 3rd from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Lake Funeral Home in Ionia.
