North Orleans – Luis VanLoton who lived with his son Will near Long Lake,
disappeared Monday night.  He can not be found or any trace of his as yet.  He
took nothing with him only what he had on, and did not take any hat.  The family
heard him up in the night but did not pay any attention.  They intend to drag
the lake which is just north of the house, as soon as the wind in favorable.

Orleans – Mr. Lewis Van Louten’s body was found in Long Lake Sunday, about 3
o’clock.  Burial Monday in Orleans cemetery.

VanLoton’s Body Found.

The body of Lewis VanLoton was found Sunday afternoon in Long Lake, but no great
surprise was created thereby as it was suspected immediately after his
disappearance, Monday night, Oct. 15, that he had drowned himself.  An inquest
was held and they decided it was clearly a case of suicide, he probably being
mentally deranged.  The burial occurred Monday at the Orleans cemetery.

Mr. VanLoton was over seventy years of age, and was well known, having been a
resident of Orleans township for many years.  Recently he has been living with
his son who lives on the banks of Long Lake, a lane running from the barn
directly to the lake a distance of about 40 rods.  He undoubtedly passed down
this lane, got into one of the two boats fastened there, shoved out to where the
water was deep enough, and deliberately jumped in.  He had on his pants, shirt
and shoes was all.  He has a son upon the Pacific coast and also a daughter in
northern Michigan.  He was seen to have quite a sum of money a short time ago
which has not been found yet.
