Sister Villana Van Mullekom, OP, entered eternal life on March 12, 2003 at the 
age of 76, after 59 years of vowed religious life.  She was born on April 1, 
1926 in Flint.

Her family soon moved to Essexville and her earliest memories are of farm life 
there, with simple living and hard work enriched by a strong faith life.  She 
credits her family and the priests and sisters of St. John’s Essexville for 
nurturing her religious vocation.  In 1943 she entered Marywood in Grand 
Rapids to become a Dominican Sister.  She pursued her education at Aquinas 
College in Grand Rapids, the University of New Mexico, Xavier University in 
New Orleans, and the University of Detroit, acquiring several degrees.  She 
taught primary students in Michigan and New Mexico until 1986, when she came 
to SS Peter and Paul Parish in Ionia to tutor students and to serve as the 
parish secretary.  She won the hearts of many people in Ionia with her 
friendliness, her kindness, and her sympathetic ear, working until this last 
Christmas.

Sister Villana is survived by her sister Elsie Krause and her brother Jim and 
Audrey VanMullekom of Essexville; nieces, nephews, cousins, many friends and a 
loving community.

Evening Prayer with Remembering will be Friday, March 14, at 7 p.m. and the 
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, March 15, 1:30 p.m. 
at Dominican Chapel, Marywood, 2025 E. Fulton Street, Grand Rapids.  A 
Memorial Mass will be celebrated at SS Peter and Paul Church, 434 High Street, 
Ionia. Tuesday, at 7 p.m.
