VanNess, who for the past year or more had been in failing health, died at 10 o’clock this morning at his home on West Lincoln avenue. Funeral from the residence at 1 o’clock Thursday afternoon, interment in Highland Park cemetery. Mr. VanNess was born in Burghill, Ohio, October 9, 1839, being 67 years of age his last birthday. He came to Ionia from Ohio nearly forty years ago, and for many years was in the business of handling musical instruments. Having a good tenor voice he also taught singing school in the early days, but in recent years had given his time to the duties of county agent, giving the office his careful supervision. About a year ago he began to fail, and since had been practically incapacitated for business, while for the past two months he had been confined to his bed. His sister-in-law, Mrs. VanNess, of Grand Ledge, and M. M. Currier, of Ionia, with a trained nurse cared for him during that time. Mr. VanNess was married at Burghill, July 1, 1866, and the next year they came to Ionia. The home was always the residence where he died. The first sorrow came in the family when the daughter, Hattie, Mrs. J. H. Prout, died fourteen years ago, while Mrs. VanNess died five years ago. The immediate relatives who survive Mr. VanNess are two sisters, one in Wisconsin, the other in Ohio, both of whom are ill and cannot come to the funeral. The eldest sister was here a few months ago to see him. Mr. VanNess was always a desirable citizen who took an active interest in public affairs. He was a great admirer and worker in floriculture, and when flowers and decorations were needed for Memorial or other days of this kind, he was first to carry on the work of decoration. The son-in-law, John H. Prout, of Howard City, arrived at noon and is looking after the funeral arrangements.
