The Belding Banner, Thursday, August 15, 1907
John H. VanNess, County Agent for the Board of Corrections and Charities of 
Ionia County, died Tuesday at his home in Ionia.  His age was 67, and he had 
been a resident of Ionia nearly forty years, coming here from the Western 
Reserve section of Ohio.  He was active in politics and of a stirring 
disposition and social qualities that made him widely known.  For a long term 
of years he had served as county agent for juvenile offenders, a work in which 
he took a deep, humanitarian interest, and in which he had been of immense 
service.

He is the last of his immediate family. His wife died five years ago, his only 
child, a daughter, fifteen years ago, and her only child, a son, in infancy.

Mr. VanNess was well known in Belding and vicinity, he having been called here 
on business connected with his office quite frequently.
