"Ernie" VanOcker, 86, of Belding died Saturday morning, Jan. 4, 2014 at home. Ernie was born on July 16, 1927, in Greenville, the son of Theodore R. and Nina Mae (Compton) VanOcker. Ernie proudly served his country at the end of World War II in the United States Air Force. He retired from Extruded Metals after 39 years of service, retiring in 1986. He was a longtime member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Belding, was a life member of the Sheridan VFW, Belding American Legion and of the Knights of Columbus. In earlier years he had served on the honor guard of the American Legion and had donated over 10 gallons of blood. He enjoyed camping, square dancing and spending time with his family. Ernie will be greatly missed by his family and friends. He was married on Sept. 23, 1950, at St. Mary Catholic Church, Miriam to Rosemary Shindorf. Ernie is loved and survived by his wife Rosemary and their children, Dale and Maria VanOcker of Belding, Benjamin and Barbara VanOcker of Las Vegas, Ralph and Gerri VanOcker of Gowen, Cathy Jo and David Ramsey of Lansing, Sue and Mark Pitcher of Lakeview, Phyllis and Scott Sprader of Suamico, Wis.; 18 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; and two sisters, Thedora Maltman of Lowell and Mary Ann and Fred Reeves of Smyrna. Ernie was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Bruce and Roy; a granddaughter Brenda VanOcker; two sisters, Loretta and Maxine; and two brothers, Earl and Marvin. Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Belding with Father Darrel Kempf presiding. Visitation will be one hour before Mass at church and on Monday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. with a rosary prayed at 7:30 p.m. at Johnson-Feuerstein Funeral Home, Belding. Interment will be in St. Joseph Cemetery. Memorials may be given to St. Joseph Church, Special Olympics or a charity of one’s choice.
