July 19, 2012 Rita Arlene (Gibson-Pennington) VanOcker, 85, of Charlotte, formerly of Orleans and Smyrna, passed away on Monday, July 16, at Eaton county Medical Care Facility in Charlotte. She was born in Mt. Pleasant, the daughter of Willard and Sadie (Saari) Gibson, both of whom preceded her in death. She married Glenn Pennington and he preceded her in death in 1971. She later married Theodore VanOcker and he preceded her in death in 1978. Following high school Rita completed coursework at Mount Pleasant Beauty School, but was most accomplished as a seamstress, having put her skills to work at Jolly Kids - Togs, where she worked intermittently from 1954 through 1979. She had a great sense of humor and was a wonderful and caring grandmother. Rita leaves to cherish her memory her children; a son, Dr. Franklin Dennis Pennington of Mt. Dora, Fla., a daughter, Kaye L. (David) Setchfield of Charlotte; grandchildren, Seth Pennington of Tacoma, Wash., Kristin (Ryan) Emerick of Vermontville an Scott Setchfield of Bloomington, Ind., great grandchildren Isabel and Lydia; step children, Ernest (Rosemary) VanOcker Thedora Maltman and Maryann (Fred) Reeves, all of Belding; several step grandchildren and great grand children; a sister, Shirley French and a brother, Willard K. Gibson, both of Mt. Pleasant; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husbands, she was preceded in death by siblings Richard A. Gibson and Norma Karcher. Rita's family will greet visitors from 5 until 7 p.m. on Thursday evening, July 19 at Verdun Family Funeral Home, 303 S. Bridge St., Belding. A Memory and Eulogy Service will take place at 7 p.m. with family and friends encouraged to share stories of the highlights of Rita's life. Interment will take place at Woodard lake Cemetery in Fenwick. Those planning an expression of sympathy are welcome to consider a memorial contribution in Rita's memory to the activities fund at the Eaton County Medical care Facility.
