On June 9, 1913, occurred the death of Benjamin R. VanPatten at the residence of his nephew, Albert VanPatten, in Hastings, with whom he had made his home for the past eight years. Mr. VanPatten was born in Onondaga, N.Y., December 22, 1823. August 8, 1847, he was united in marriage to Tryphenia Wilcox, who preceded him to the home above eight years and four months. He came to Michigan as a pioneer in 1853 and served in the Civil War as a member of Co. K., 12 Regiment of Michigan Volunteers. Mr. VanPatten was a resident of Lyons for some 20 years, leaving here shortly after the death of his wife. Mr. VanPatten was of a very generous, gentle disposition and leaves many warm friends. He also leaves to mourn his loss two brothers, several nephews and nieces and an adopted daughter. Funeral services were held in Hastings Sunday morning, and the body brought to Lyons the same day for burial in the Lyons cemetery.
